A Simpler Laundry Routine for the Place You Rest

Have you ever climbed into freshly washed sheets and thought, Ahhh…this feels so good?
There is something wonderful about clean sheets at the end of a long day.
But somewhere along the way, we began associating “clean” with a strong fragrance.
If the sheets smell like a meadow, mountain breeze, tropical waterfall or something called “fresh linen,” they must be clean…right?
But I started asking a different question:
What if truly clean doesn’t need to smell like anything at all?

A Little Act of Hospitality I Won’t Forget

On a recent trip, a dear friend did something for me before I even arrived.
She washed my bedding in plant-based laundry detergent.
No heavily scented detergent. No fragranced dryer sheets. Just fresh, clean bedding.
She knew that I had become intentional about reducing unnecessary synthetic fragrances and chemicals in my home, especially in the bedroom.
And she remembered.
I cannot tell you how cared for that made me feel.
It wasn’t really about the laundry detergent.
It was hospitality.
She had taken the time to think about what would make her guest feel comfortable and welcome.
Isn’t that what true hospitality is?
Not creating a picture-perfect guest room.
Not buying new towels.
Not making everything look like a magazine.
It is simply asking:
“What would help this person feel cared for while they are in my home?”
That one little gesture reminded me that some of the most meaningful acts of hospitality are the ones nobody else ever sees.

Your Sheets Spend All Night With You

Now think about your own bed for a minute.
We spend roughly a third of our lives sleeping, with our faces against pillowcases and our bodies wrapped in sheets and blankets.
That realization changed the way I looked at my laundry room.
I began paying attention not only to whether my laundry looked clean, but also to what I was using to wash it.
Many conventional detergents, scent boosters, fabric softeners and dryer sheets are formulated with fragrances and other ingredients designed to remain on fabrics after washing or drying. And while they do remain on the laundry, that smell is also the 'off-gassing' of the chemicals used.
And that made me wonder:
If I am working so hard to create a peaceful nighttime routine, what am I bringing into bed with me?
I didn’t need to become afraid of my laundry room.
I simply needed to make a few different choices.

Lighten the Load

This is where my philosophy of being the gatekeeper of my home comes in.
I cannot control everything I encounter during the day.
But I can make thoughtful decisions about what I routinely bring through my front door.
And the laundry room is a surprisingly simple place to start.
You don’t have to throw everything away tomorrow.
You don’t need a cabinet full of  “clean” products.
And you certainly don’t need another overwhelming list of things you're supposedly doing wrong.
Just lighten the load.
When your current detergent runs out, consider replacing it with a simpler plant-based option.
Skip the scent boosters.
Try wool dryer balls instead of fragranced dryer sheets, especially since dryer sheets are one of MOST toxic items.

If you love having a beautifully scented home, begin exploring ways to create that experience without relying on heavy synthetic fragrance. Use Young Living's essential oils for your dryer balls and in your laundry. I have many recipes I would be happy to share if you would like to make your own 'Signature Scent' for your laundry room.
One swap.
Then another.
Then another.
That is how I approach a lower-toxin home.

But I Want My Laundry to Smell Clean!

I understand.
For years, many of us were taught that fragrance was the proof that something was clean.
But fragrance and cleanliness aren't the same thing.
Clean laundry can simply smell like…
nothing.
That may take a little getting used to!
Eventually, you may begin to notice the difference between laundry that is actually fresh and laundry that has simply been heavily perfumed.
And there is something incredibly comforting about slipping between simple, freshly washed sheets at night.
No overpowering perfume.
No “spring meadow.”
No “ocean breeze.”
Just your bed.

Give Your Body One Less Thing to Deal With

This is especially important to me at night because nighttime is when I want my bedroom to become the quietest, cleanest environment possible.
I dim the lights.
I quiet the house.
I prepare my body for rest.
And I want the things touching my skin all night long to be part of that same intentional environment.
That is one reason laundry became part of my Tomorrow Starts Tonight™ philosophy.
A better tomorrow isn't created by one magical bedtime trick.
It is often built through many small choices we make throughout the day.
Morning light.
Movement.
How we handle stress.
What we eat and drink.
The rhythms we create in the evening.
And yes—even what we wash our sheets in.

Start With Your Next Load

Before you start your next load of laundry, take 30 seconds and look at what is sitting on your laundry-room shelf. Turn it over and read the ingredients you are choosing (to wear) each time you purchase this product.
Ask yourself:
Do I need all of this?
Maybe your first step is simply eliminating the scented dryer sheet.
Maybe it is not replacing scent beads when the container is empty.
Maybe it is choosing a plant-based detergent the next time you shop. You know, the kind that is safe for the littlest people & pets in your life with no poison control warning.
You don't have to overhaul your entire home this weekend.
You are simply becoming more intentional about what earns a place in it.
That is what being the gatekeeper of your home means to me.
Not fear.
Not perfection.
Awareness followed by one better choice.
And tonight, when you pull back those sheets and climb into bed, perhaps you'll think about my sweet friend who quietly washed a set of bedding before her guest arrived.
Because sometimes caring well for ourselves—and caring well for the people we love—looks surprisingly ordinary.
Sometimes…
it looks like a load of laundry.
